PMSA was established to promote cooperation and collaboration among medical students by breaking down social barriers. Through creating opportunities for dialogue and facilitating clinical exchanges, PMSA aims to foster global understanding and professional growth among future healthcare leaders. This initiative was strengthened by the creation of the Standing Committee on Professional Exchange in 2007.
SCOPE is a professional exchange program that works on offering a one month clerkship to clinical medical students. Its aim is to promote cultural understanding and cooperation between students and all health professionals that help students in their medical practices.
The Standing Committee on Research Exchange (SCORE) supervises and coordinates the research exchange program, it provides students with intensive research projects which allow them to expand their knowledge of specific scientific areas of their choice, while encouraging the formation of professional and social networks abroad.
Participation in the PMSA Professional Exchange Program is open to medical students from any of our National Member Organizations (NMOs). To apply, you must submit your application through your respective NMO. If you are from a country where IFMSA is already represented, please reach out to the local representative. "The student Waad says about her experience of the professional student exchange affiliated to the “SCOPE” Committee in the State of Bulgaria:
“Two days ago I completed a one-month internship in the Department of General Surgery at the University Hospital Lozenetz Hospital “Sofia - Bulgaria.
I cannot express this rich experience in a few words, but it was a valuable experience scientifically and culturally.
This experience gave me a lot of skills on a personal and academic level, and most importantly, it made it possible
I have the opportunity to get to know Bulgaria, which I always heard about from my parents, where they studied.
But the experience is completely different than just hearing stories about the country, as I had the opportunity to get to know each other
The wonderful nature, customs and culture, in addition to the ancient history of this country.
And I don't forget the people I met from different countries, they were like family and more!"
“Everything was perfect in terms of university Who treated me as if I was a student of theirs, and the professor and doctor responsible for me who didn't They were stingy with any information that could benefit me now and in the future. My shift was mainly in laboratories. University and I learned a lot of things there, whether practical or theoretical, and frankly the amount of things that I did What I learned from them was enormous and in a more than wonderful way, in short, my scientific experience in Poland She was idealistic without exaggeration. For the Confederation of Poland, and specifically Gdansk, it is a Confederation Very cooperative, smooth and fast communication with them, and the CP responsible for me, with whom I built a friendly relationship It was strong and all the officials did not fail to do anything. As for our union in Nablus, they were in contact They were honest with me every step of the way, and they always had quick solutions to any problem I might face There is a big thank you to the Etihad crew because they literally took responsibility."
This exchange opportunity was my first time traveling alone and to a country, I never imagined I would visit. I was accepted for a research project on Alzheimer’s disease at Privolzhsky Research Medical University in Russia.
I spent a month in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, and during that time, I also visited a few other cities as a tourist. I was honestly shocked because Russia far exceeded my expectations! It’s a beautiful country with an incredible system, the people are incredibly kind, and there is absolutely no racism. But the best part was the exchange students I was with, we were like a family!
Throughout the month, most of my time was spent in the university’s laboratories, where we did everything ourselves and conducted experiments alongside the professors. They were extremely kind, never hesitated to share their knowledge, and treated us like friends rather than just students. I gained an immense amount of knowledge in a very enjoyable and simple way. I can summarize my scientific experience as nothing less than excellent.
The second and, in my opinion, most important aspect was the huge change in my personality! From the moment I left Palestine, I felt like I had stepped out of my comfort zone. I had to do everything on my own and rely solely on myself in a country where no one spoke my language and where I didn’t know anyone. But this is the best experience any student could ever have in their life. No matter how much I talk about how amazing and full of new and strange experiences it was, I could never do it justice.
In 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the SCORE exchange program in Egypt, where I gained invaluable research experience as a medical student. This experience not only enhanced my academic knowledge but also exposed me to diverse perspectives from fellow students worldwide.
During my time in Egypt, I collaborated with students from different countries, all united by our shared passion for learning and healthcare. Together, we conducted research that expanded our understanding of global health issues while learning from one another's unique experiences and backgrounds. The program fostered an environment of collaboration, curiosity, and professional growth.
Beyond the academic aspect, I was fortunate to explore Egypt’s rich cultural heritage. I had the chance to visit iconic locations, such as Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Dahab, Sharm El Sheikh, and Alexandria. Each destination offered its own blend of history, natural beauty, and fascinating cultural experiences. From the majestic pyramids in Cairo to the serene beaches of Dahab, I was continuously awestruck by the country’s diverse landscapes and the warmth of its people.
Learning about Egyptian culture firsthand was a highlight of my journey. I immersed myself in local traditions, tasted traditional Egyptian cuisine, and engaged in conversations that deepened my appreciation for the country’s history and customs.
This exchange program not only shaped my academic journey but also provided lifelong memories and friendships. It broadened my global perspective, reinforced my passion for medicine, and allowed me to witness the incredible spirit of international cooperation in healthcare.
I am deeply grateful for this enriching experience, which will continue to inspire me in both my personal and professional life.
